Jenny Marketou

Born in Athens, Greece Jenny Marketou is based in New York City .Her work is media based and her practice combines private and public performances and interventions, video installations, single channel videos, photography, web based projects, teaching, lecturing and other forms of social actions. She has created a bodywork with video, digital technologies and social networks which is unified by sympathy, and humor for the individual in the contemporary world of dense communication, mobility, surveillance and social networking. Marketou has taught at Cooper Union School of Art in New York City and has lectured extensively in academic institutions and art centers around the world. She has is the author of the book “ Great Longing: The Greek of Astoria, New York”, with photographs and interviews of first generation Greek immigrants who made home Astoria, Queens.

Marketou’s solo multimedia show Paperophanies will be launched on October 9, 2011 at Praxis Gallery, Atrium Museum in Vitoria in collaboration with local art universities, local groups and artists in Basque Country in Spain. Her public installation SILVER Series is currently on view at Gateways: Art and Networked Culture exhibition at Kumu Art Museum in Tallinn, Estonia, Cultural Capital of Europe commissioned by Goethe Institute.  Most recently she had a solo exhibition at (EMST) National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens, Greece and at Fondazione Claudio Buziol in Venice, Italy in collaboration with Tina B Festival and students from the Art and Design School in Treviso along with an exhibition and screening at Contemporary Art Museum Reina Sophia in Madrid, Spain.

Her work has also been featured at 54th Venice Biennial in Venice; Onassis Cultural Center, Athens, Greece; APEX Art, New York City; PULSE Art Fair, New York in collaboration with Anita Beckers Gallery, Frankfurt/Main; at 3rd Biennial of Seville, in Seville, Spain; KunsthalleBasel, Switzerland; Strozzina Center of Contemporary Art, Florence; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Kunstverein Ludwigshafen, Mannheim, Germany; The New Museum, New York City; Eyebeam, NYC; Rose Museum of Contemporary Art, Brandeis University ,Boston; ZKM, Center for New Media and Art, Karlsruhe, Germany, 2006; Queens Museum of Art, Queens, NY; Breeder Gallery in Athens, Greece; CornerHouse ,Manchester, UK; Krannert Art Museum , Urbana-Champaign, Illinois among other venues. She represented Greece in the Biennial of Sao Paolo, Brazil and in Manifesta at Witte de With, Rotterdam.

Jenny Marketou, nacida en Atenas, Grecia, vive en Nueva York. Su trabajo abarca toda una pluralidad de medios en los que combina performances e intervenciones públicas y privadas, video instalaciones, vídeo monocanal, fotografía, proyectos en la web, educación, conferencias y otras formas de acción social. Ha desarrollado un corpus artístico a partir de vídeo, tecnologías digitales y redes sociales que tienen como puntos en común la simpatía, el miedo??? Y sentido del humor hacia el individuo en el mundo contemporáneo de comunicación masificada, mobilidad, vigilancia y redes sociales. Marketou ha impartido clases en Cooper Union School of Art de Nueva York y participado en numerosas conferencias en instituciones académicas y centros de arte por todo el mundo. Es autora del libro “ Great Longing: The Greek of Astoria, New York”,con fotografías y entrevistas de la primera generación de inmigrantes griegos que se asentó en Astoria, Queens.

El proyecto multimedia de Marketou comenzará en Octubre 9, 2011 en el espacio PRAXIS de ARTIUM, el Centro-Museo Vasco de Arte Contemporáneo en Vitoria-Gasteiz, en colaboración con universidades locales, grupos locales y artistas del País Vasco. SILVER, su serie de instalaciones públicas, puede verse actualmente en la exposición Gateways: Art and Networked Culture en el Kumu Art Museum in Tallinn, Estonia, Cultural Capital of Europe comisionada por el Goethe Institute.

Blanca de la Torre (Spain, 1977)

After graduating in Art History and getting a MA in Design of Exhibition Spaces in the School of Architecture of Madrid and after working for several Art Galleries in Spain, in 2004 she formed part of the inaugural team of the MUSAC (The Contemporary Art Museum of Castilla y León, Spain). Then, she started her career as freelance curator and writer. Comisaria

Tras su paso por diversas galerias de arte, así como del MUSAC, en León, comenzó su carrera como  comisaria independiente. Colaboró con la Primera Bienal de Singapur y comenzó a realizar internacionalmente  proyectos de comisariado, destacando La Mano de Dios en Mirta Demare Gallery Rotterdam, Peekskill Project, HVCCA, New York, Destino Futuro en el Jardín Botánico de Madrid, The ArtHaus , Miami, The Promised Land, Chelsea Art Museum, New York, The Pathologies of the Turist Experience, Pist Space, Istanbul and CuraBodrum, Turkey, Celluloid Dreams, the Film Festival at Eagle Theatre and Y Gallery, New York, Alternative Revolutions, tina b Festival of Contemporary Art of Prague, Praga, Urban Video Art, The Moviehouse en The 3rd Ward, Brooklyn, New York, Critical Engagements, The Project Room for New Media of the CAM Museum, New York; Comunicacionismos: Procesos Dialécticos entre Comunicación y Consumismo, 10ª Bienal de La Habana. Actualmente es comisaria en el Museo Artium de Vitoria donde ha comisariado exposiciones como Diálogos o VideoStorias, o la programación de proyectos independientes de Praxis, y dirigido proyectos de artistas como Santiago Sierra, Ángel Marcos, Jaime Davidovich, Txuspo Poyo o Miguel Ángel Gaüeca, entre otros.
